What is tensgrity?
Tensegrity can be described as the integrity of a structure derived from the balance of tensions. Our body is one big tensegrity model with each part influencing the next. The hip bone IS connected to the thigh bone so-to-speak. EVERYTHING is connected.
This sounds like a simple statement, but more often than not our bodies are treated as separate parts; my shoulder, my knee, my ankle. In our bodies, if a strain is introduced, the load will be distributed throughout the whole body.
The muscles, skin, and especially the connective tissues are the tensional elements separated by the body’s hard compressional elements, the bones, which act as the spacers that sustain their tension. It distributes stress evenly throughout the entire structure rather than allowing it to accumulate at certain points, and also allows more stability and flexibility, as opposed to a compressional structure like a block of concrete.
Knowledge of how tensegrity affects our body forms a huge dimension in our treatments.
Spirals symbolise evolution and holistic growth.
Spirals symbolise evolution and holistic growth. The human body is fundamentally built upon spiral design and moves most efficiently in accord with spiral motion. The heart of who you are is in your DNA. The double helix DNA is a spiral. It is no surprise that from this origin comes a cascade of larger components of body parts that are fundamentally spiral in form and function. The individual muscle fibres and filaments – the actin and myosin proteins – that contract and lengthen to move our bodies do so with spiral motion. The origin and insertions of your bodies muscles, tendons and ligaments are largely oriented spirally.
On a larger scale, spirals represent moving from the external to the internal dialogue with introspection and self-discovery; expanding or contracting; releasing or building, dynamically. In treatment, the spiralling structure is acknowledged and followed on all levels, then brought back to the best functioning way for you..
